Things to consider moving forward:
- take out the Mimiya and Nikon and practice getting focus right as this was an issue in the last project
- make sure to write why I am researching certain photographers etc
This week I’ve continued my research of practitioners from the likes of Alec Soth, Robert Frank and John. This has really helped me find a direction that I want to take my project and exploring a method of documentation that I had not considered.
At the beginning of this project, Matt looked over my project proposal described my work as 'running the line of being art photography' which worried me and thought i must do a 'standard' and recognisable documentary work. Since i had a place on a photojournalism and documentary photography course at LCC i was worried that i was maybe too 'arty' and seem like i am not dedicated to documentary photograph however upon looking at Alec Soth via interviews and videos, i found that Soth described his photobook ‘Sleeping by the Mississippi’ as a 'quasi-documentary' and creating a more poetic piece. Soth broke ranks from the traditional form of documentary photography but you can still see he referencing of Robert Franks structure. I realise that my work is subjective and intimate and that through this i can justify my work and for it still to be a documentary work.
Dedicating this week to and theory has been very beneficial and I feel continuing focused research throughout the project will help me even more to find the best way of resolving my concept. I plan to continue using Soth as my guiding force in this project as i feel i am taking a similar path to him.
